Chapter 2: The CEO’s Unexpected Attention
Yeah, yeah, I’m the most pitiful. But hey, who needs love when you’ve got a hundred million? I played video games in the living room, didn’t see Chase all day. I ordered takeout for myself and watched a gossip video about rich families while eating. Suddenly, the suite door opened and Chase, who’d been gone all day, walked in. He wore a trench coat, broad-shouldered and slim-waisted, standing nearly 6’3”—imposing as ever. Seriously, no wonder the fans drooled over him. Just my luck, the video was introducing him at that exact moment. “In short, Chase Bennett is the ultimate rich guy—handsome, capable, and never a single scandal!”
I almost choked on my fries. Please tell me he didn’t hear that. Me: …I had the volume low. He probably didn’t hear it, right? Right? Obviously, Chase’s hearing was just fine. He sat down across from me. The video’s host kept going. “The only flaw with Chase Bennett is that he’s married. But that’s okay—there are plenty of other hot guys out there!”
I scrambled to close the video. Awkward. I buried my head in my food, pretending nothing happened. But Chase’s gaze stayed fixed on me. “Ahem.” I coughed. “Don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not interested in you anymore.”
“I was just watching that video to scope out my next husband. Has nothing to do with you!”
Chase frowned, eyes searching my face for any sign I was lying. I stared back, cool as a cucumber. I’m just here for the alimony, not your body! I got up to throw away my takeout, trying to put distance between us. But as soon as I stood, Chase spoke. “You’ve been different lately.”
His tone was curious, almost suspicious. I shrugged, putting on my best “I’m over it” face. “Yeah, I’ve wised up.” I looked sincere. “I know my limits. I won’t bother you anymore.”
Chase didn’t reply, just stared at me, deep in thought. I went back to my room, ready to scroll on my phone, only to see that same gossip video again. Annoyed, I left a comment: “Don’t worry, he’ll be back on the market soon.”
“Unused, like new.”
