Chapter 2: The Child Beneath the Eleventh Tree
After connecting in order, a haggard-looking woman appeared before me. She looked wrecked. Messy hair, red eyes, voice shaking.
“Ma'am, please help me find my daughter!”
Seeing the woman’s red-rimmed eyes, I felt a bit soft-hearted and softened my tone. I tried to sound gentle, but my own nerves were frayed.
“Tell me your daughter’s birth date and time, where she went missing—the more details, the better.”
Cards on the table. My finger followed the lines, hoping for something good. I started searching for the person based on the information she gave, laying out my cards, tracing the lines with my finger.
The more I searched, the darker my expression became. Something felt wrong, a heaviness pressing on my chest.
Something was wrong. It just didn’t add up. Clearly, her fate shouldn’t have ended like this…
The woman grew anxious and kept pleading: “Ma'am, if it’s not enough money, I’ll send more gifts, please, you have to help me!”
I shook my head. “It’s not about the money.”
“Your daughter… she’s already gone.”
“Go to the park closest to your home. Enter and turn left, under the eleventh tree.”
The woman looked devastated, but she still calmly hung up the video call. She wiped her eyes, nodded, and disappeared from the screen.
“Thank you, Ma'am.”
Once the woman left, the chat started flooding again.
“Sigh, how could this happen.”
“I’d rather believe Ma'am was wrong this time.”
To save time, I connected with the next person. My mind was still on the missing girl, but I pushed forward.
No sooner had I finished than the chat blew up all over again.
“Oh my god! That woman’s child really is gone…”
“The news already reported it, and it really was under the eleventh tree to the left after entering the park!”
“Ma'am is incredible!”
Looking at the chat, I opened the trending topic. My hands were shaking.
A witness had posted a photo.
The girl’s face was pale, but her brow was dark, shrouded in shadow.
One look and you could tell she was plagued by misfortune.
But her birth date and time showed she was a child blessed with great fortune!
Someone took her luck. Just like that.
Just as I wanted to look closer at the photo, it was blocked. The page flashed, then went dark.
Still, I had a job to do. Back to the stream. Suppressing the doubts in my heart, I went back to the livestream to help more people. My mind kept circling back to the little girl.
After the stream, as usual, I checked my backstage DMs. My inbox was stuffed, but one message caught my eye.
I found a message from Carter Hayes.
“Ma'am, it was my fans who were wrong before. They shouldn’t have said those things about you. Please, Ma'am, let bygones be bygones, help me!”
I was a bit puzzled. After confirming it was really him, I replied simply:
“Send your birth date and time.”
Very soon, Carter sent a string of numbers and his birthplace. I stared at the screen, my heart pounding.
I stared at those numbers, feeling like I’d fallen into an ice bath. My hands went cold, breath shallow.
Great fortune, a dazzling career, born to be an actor.
At 28, destined to become Best Actor.
But that was clearly Jamie Lin’s fate!
No wonder, no wonder I could never reach Jamie.
So Jamie wasn’t deliberately avoiding me—he had already…
My nose stung.
It felt like a piece of my heart had been carved out, the pain unbearable. I pressed my palm to my chest, fighting to steady my breath.
If only I’d agreed back then…
If I’d gone to LA with him, he wouldn’t have been so easily hurt by others.
At least I could have protected him…
Seeing I hadn’t replied for a long time, Carter got anxious.
He sent message after message.
“Ma'am, name your price! Two million, is that enough?”
“Ma'am, you’re the only one who can save me now!”
I took a deep breath and asked, “What do you want?”
“It feels like my luck is being stolen by someone. Ma'am, please, help me!”
Reading this, my eyelashes trembled slightly.
Could Jamie still be saved?
Soon, I typed out a reply.
“This job is too dangerous. Two million isn’t enough. Five million.”
Carter’s money, I want.
The life he owes Jamie, I want too.
Carter didn’t hesitate for long. Soon, he replied, “Okay.”
