Chapter 2: The Party That Changed Everything
To dodge Nathan, I took a month off school and locked myself away at home, working out and shedding pounds.
The engagement party’s tonight. I’m at the stairwell, nerves jangling, when a shadow flickers by—a black silhouette, dark eyes full of disbelief and something way more complicated.
Under the chandelier’s glow, I’m not the awkward, chubby kid anymore. I’m in a killer designer gown, curves in all the right places, long dark hair, and sun-kissed skin that practically glows. I almost don’t recognize myself.
Then—bam. I slip. My mind blanks out. Crap, not now! If I fall, I’m toast.
But instead of face-planting, I land in a warm, steady embrace. I catch a whiff of fresh cologne, feel a hot breath on my ear—intense and close.
Nathan. Of course.
“Don’t be scared. I’ve got you.”
I look up, straight into those cold eyes—except now, there’s something gentle, almost soft. His hand shields my head, his face so close I can count his lashes.
Every nerve in my body zaps to life. It’s like someone plugged me into a socket.
“What are you two doing?”
The living room’s packed. Guests gawk at us, mouths open. And there’s Carter Bennett, clutching a bouquet and going red as a stop sign.
“It’s not what you think!” I shove Nathan away, pretending not to see the hurt flicker in his eyes.
“I want to break off the engagement.”
Carter storms out, running smack into Sierra Monroe. Their eyes meet—instant fireworks.
Sierra gasps, clutches her chest, and faints right into Carter’s arms.
Meanwhile, Nathan’s giving me a glare that could melt steel. Wolf in sheep’s clothing, right there.
Inside, I’m screaming. Why is he glaring at me? His girl got snatched, but so did my guy! This is a two-way street!
