Chapter 6: Schemes, Scandals, and Exile
On a chosen day, I asked the governor’s son to accompany me to the Whitmore estate, saying I missed my adoptive parents. The governor’s son agreed.
When we arrived, Ethan was there to propose. No coincidence—I’d arranged it. Everyone came to greet us. I saw Piper kneeling, envy all over her face. When the governor’s son gently told them to rise, Piper’s eyes lit up with awe.
She couldn’t take her eyes off him. Suddenly, Ethan lost his appeal. She immediately set her sights on the governor’s son.
So when Ethan proposed, Piper acted up. In front of everyone, she said, “I won’t marry.”
The Whitmores nearly fainted. What had they done to deserve such a daughter?
Ethan was stunned. “Piper, what are you saying?”
“I said I won’t marry.”
“Why? We worked so hard to get this marriage from the governor.”
“The governor never agreed to our marriage. He only agreed to dissolve your engagement with Marissa,” Piper replied, matter-of-fact.
In a time traveler’s mind, arranged marriage was ridiculous. But she still didn’t get this world.
“Enough!” the governor’s son shouted. “How dare you call my sister by name?!”
“I…” Piper softened instantly. “I was wrong, please forgive me, sir.”
Her gaze was bold and direct. Ethan was furious. Piper had treated him like this before; he knew the signs.
“Piper, marriage is up to the families, not you!” Ethan tried to sound righteous, but his voice shook. If Piper refused him, he’d be a laughingstock again.
I watched Ethan sweat, probably never imagining Piper would turn on him so quickly.
“You’re all just pitiful victims of a backward society,” Piper sneered. “I don’t care what you do, but my marriage is up to me, not fate!”
As soon as she finished—
Smack! The Whitmores finally lost it and slapped her. “No manners at all. Who said you could speak here?!”
Piper was stunned. She could accept punishment from the governor and first lady, but not from her own father.
“Dad, even if you beat me to death, I won’t marry Ethan.” With that, Piper stormed out.
The Whitmores were trembling with rage.
“Mr. Whitmore, your daughter is too much for our Carter family,” Ethan’s father said.
Mr. Whitmore apologized. “It’s our fault. I’m sorry, Mr. Carter.”
“You need to let everyone know my son isn’t to blame.”
“Don’t worry, Mr. Carter.”
The Carters left in a huff. As they did, Ethan glanced back at me. I smiled, colder than ice.
After they left, I asked the governor’s son to return to the mansion with me. The Whitmores saw us off, apologizing again. “Sorry for all the trouble.”
The governor’s son smoothed things over. I pulled Mrs. Whitmore aside. “Mom.”
Privately, I still called her that. She burst into tears. “My Marissa, why aren’t you my real daughter? Your father and I have always been kind and never did anything wrong, yet ended up with a daughter like Piper.”
“At first, we thought she was a gift from heaven. Now we think she’s a demon reborn.” Mrs. Whitmore sobbed.
“Mom, Piper really shouldn’t stay. Talk to Dad and send her back to the countryside before she causes more trouble,” I advised.
“Alright.”
“Don’t worry, Mom. As long as you don’t support Piper, you’ll be fine while I’m here.”
“Marissa, you are my true darling…” Mrs. Whitmore wept.
