Chapter 5: The Footage That Changed Everything
Before he could finish, news came in—the alley’s surveillance footage had been restored. A breakthrough at last.
The detective’s phone buzzed. A voice crackled through the radio, urgent and excited. Hope flickered in the room. Everyone tensed.
“All right, you guys keep checking,” Dad said, rubbing his brow. He was ready to head home.
He gathered his things, exhaustion written all over him. The promise of a break, however brief, was a lifeline. He needed it.
“You’re leaving?” Uncle Jeff asked, surprised, raising an eyebrow.
He raised an eyebrow, glancing at the clock. The day was far from over. No rest yet.
“Caleb won an award today. I’m going home to celebrate,” Dad replied, looking relaxed. He almost smiled.
He smiled, pride softening his features. For a moment, he looked like the dad I remembered. I missed that look.
“It’s up! The footage is up!” someone shouted.
A shout echoed down the hallway. The detectives scrambled, crowding around the monitor. Anticipation soared.
His voice was high, urgent. Everyone rushed over, hearts pounding. No one wanted to miss it.
The room was packed, bodies pressed shoulder to shoulder. The air crackled with anticipation. The energy was electric.
“Wait, is that… Savannah?”
Uncle Jeff’s exclamation made Dad’s heart skip a beat. His foot, already out the door, froze in place. Time stood still.
The words hung in the air, heavy and electric. Dad’s hand trembled on the doorknob. The past, the present, and the truth collided in that single, breathless moment.
