Chapter 11: Chance Meeting—Night Shift Destiny
After I work for bookstore almost one month, my wound nearly heal finish, I jam Chief Olumide again by chance.
I dey thank God for small mercies—at least the pain reduce.
By 11 p.m., bookstore owner send me to deliver books go the building across.
You know say for Lagos, people dey hustle till late. Security nor dey play for that side, na so dem scan me like say I be spy.
After plenty security check, I finally enter the building.
My leg dey shake, but I gats show say I be strong woman.
After I drop the books, I wan go. The office quiet—almost everybody don go house. As I dey wait for stairs, I hear small sound from end of corridor, like person dey suffer.
The kind cry nor be ordinary. Na real pain, no be form.
Stairs slow. I turn look the corridor.
Bullet comments dey beg me make I no poke nose, even dey suggest make I go car park wait for Chief Olumide to close.
Dem talk say Naija wahala nor concern me, but my spirit no gree.
But that pained voice just touch me. I stand small, then finally waka go the end.
Na so I follow my heart, even though my head dey warn me.
