Chapter 2: Side Characters and Storm Warnings
So, that’s how it is.
It hit me all at once—the air thick and heavy, like the moment before a summer storm. No more pretending.
When the comments first started, I thought maybe I was just hallucinating after too many sleepless nights.
But now it was crystal clear: I used to think I was the protagonist. Turns out, I’m just the plot device who gets written out in Act Two.
Now that I’ve helped the male lead become league champion, it’s time for me to be tossed aside.
*[Caleb, stop worrying about the side chick. She’s always putting on a show. Go to the lobby—Riley’s waiting for your autograph!]*
*[Yeah, yeah, if you don’t go, the little crybaby will start bawling again.]*
Caleb, still in his Redfield team jersey, stood in the crowd. He shot me a cold glance, shoulders hunched like a kid dodging detention, and was about to leave.
The jersey looked new, but the way he wore it—shoulders tight, eyes hard—felt worn-out and tired.
I asked out of habit, "Where are you going? We’re taking photos soon."
*[Uh-oh, is the side chick about to stop them from meeting? This is their chance to exchange contact info!]*
*[Girl, I’m in a bad mood today. Don’t make me flame you.]*
"Bathroom." He wouldn’t meet my eyes, shoulders hunched like a kid dodging detention.
I nodded and turned away without another word.
The comments were shocked that, for once, I didn’t try to ruin the mood.
Maybe, out of pride, I should have tried to stop them from getting close right in front of me.
But honestly—three years of feelings can’t keep a wolf at bay. Fine, let it go.
After all, if I could nurture the league’s number one jungler, I can nurture another.
In this e-sports world, the one thing we don’t lack is talent.
My heart ached, but my mind was clear. This was America—sports is business. Loyalty is just a slogan on a banner at the back of the gym.
